Repair is based on the principle of conserving buildings with minimum loss of fabric. Contrary to this restoration means work with the purpose of returning something to its previous state. Great care should be exercised when attempting to restore a building or architectural detail so that there is a negligible effect on the component characteristics.

Restoration may often be subjective and speculative and should always be undertaken with caution.
